Beirut explosion: UN experts demand an independent and rapid investigation

Beirut-ALSHARQIYA   August  14 : United Nations experts in the field of human rights called for an independent and rapid investigation into the devastating explosion that occurred in Beirut last week, expressing their concern about the culture of "impunity" prevailing in Lebanon.
 In a joint statement, the experts said that they support calls for a prompt, impartial, credible and independent investigation based on human rights principles, to look into all allegations, concerns and needs related to the explosion, as well as basic failures in the field of human rights protection.
 They added that the powers of the investigation should be broad so that it could clear any systematic failure on the part of the Lebanese authorities and institutions in the area of ​​protecting human rights.
 The experts stressed that the investigation must take into account not to reveal the identities of victims and witnesses, and that its results be made public.
