Qatar buys Champions League broadcast rights at a low price

Qatar-ALSHARQIYA  June 10: The Qatari network, "beIN", has retained the exclusive rights to broadcast the Champions League matches for the next 3 years, for $600 million, according to Bloomberg.

And the American website indicated that the Qatari network managed to renew its contract with the European Football Association (UEFA) to retain the right to broadcast the matches of the Champions League and the European League, in addition to the European Women’s Champions League in the Middle East and North Africa, according to a person familiar with the matter. .

According to the person, who declined to be identified due to the confidentiality of the negotiations, the new contract is 25% less than the previous contract between Qatari channels and UEFA.

The beIN media network acquired the rights to the Champions League and European League in 2017, in a four-year contract.

Bloomberg notes that the lower prices reflect the fact that beIN channels are still unable to broadcast in Saudi Arabia, the largest market in the Middle East and North Africa, despite the thawing of tensions between Qatar and the kingdom.

And at the beginning of this year, Saudi Arabia ended the boycott of its neighbor Qatar, after three years of disputes.

Saudi Arabia has been widely accused of being linked to the piracy of the rights to broadcast international football matches through channels called "BeoutQ", but Riyadh strongly denies this.

The European Football Association recently announced plans to reform the format of its major tournaments, including the Champions League (Champions League) after facing the threat of a separate competition called the "European Super League" that would have included 15 of the biggest clubs of the old continent.

But the plans for the Super League collapsed within two days after the English clubs withdrew due to political pressure, according to British media.
