Paris-ALSHARQIYA June 10: French club Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, in a free transfer deal, after his departure from Liverpool.
Paris Saint-Germain said in a statement, Thursday, that the 30-year-old Dutch international has joined in a 3-year deal until 2024.
Wijnaldum played 237 games over 5 seasons with Liverpool, helping the English team win the Champions League in 2019 and the English Premier League last year.
The player chose not to renew his contract with the "red", and it was initially expected that he would join Barcelona.
But press reports stated that Wijnaldum would earn 9.5 million euros annually in Paris, which is almost double what he was earning in Liverpool (5 million euros).
After signing his contract, Wijnaldum said: "I am joining one of the best teams in Europe. PSG have proven their strength in the past years. I am convinced that together, and with our fans, we can reach far and better places."
The club's management is looking forward to strengthening the team after its failure to win the French League, as Lille presented one of the biggest surprises in European football in the past seasons and grabbed the title in the last stage.
The Paris club was also eliminated from the semi-finals of the Champions League, at the hands of Manchester City.
